We have a new project to show you! And we are SO excited with how it turned out, and our wonderful clients are too!

This space was incredibly expansive, but the wall wasn’t utilized and the fireplace looked bulky and out of place. With this wall being seen throughout the rest of them home, we needed to make it full-scale at every angle.

One of the main desires was comfortability for the family because its the main gathering space that opens up from the kitchen. Our clients loved soft earth tones with an emphasis on blues and greens. They wanted to display treasured books, vases and family photos. Adding bookcases made the fireplace make sense and helped ground how heavy the stone was to the once-bare room.

THE BOOKCASES

A shining star on this project was the paint we chose for this space! It’s even more beautiful in person. It’s a beautiful moody blue—green—grey!? It transitions depending on the time of day, but what we do know, is that it works! Sherwin Williams, Escape Gray, was used on both the bookcases and walls to make the entire space seamless. A designer’s note: when ceilings are so tall, it’s important to minimize the odd space above the bookcases. We do this by painting the bookcases the same color as the entirety of the wall. Try to avoid the gap above cabinets when they don’t reach the ceiling.

THE TELEVISION

The family didn’t want the television to be the main focus and with the fireplace being so tall, we wanted to take advantage of the height when designing the bookcases. These reasons validated our decision to place the television on the lower bookcase. You can’t see this in the pictures, but the television swivels out to help the flexibility and ergonomics of the space.

LIGHTING

With only two recessed lights and a ceiling fan, lighting was a main issue, even with the large windows, the room always felt too dark. You’ll hear us often say we need to “layer lighting,” refer back to one of our previous blog posts to understand what we mean by that. We replaced the ceiling fan with a beautiful chandelier, added sconces to the bookcases and placed table lamps throughout the room. This made the room well-lit but still moody, cozy and functional.

THE DETAILS

We tried to reflect the family’s love for Arts and Crafts style throughout the design. Selecting cabinet pulls, hinges and even the lighting gives a slight nod to the classic craftsman style. Luckily, our client trusted us and our vision and we think it turned out beautifully.

Office Update!

We’ve been super busy here at the office and we’ve done a few updates we wanted to show you! Wish we were in a place to throw a party and have an open house like we did a couple years back. But until then, we’re still designing and celebrating the wins and missing you guys all the same!

Take a look at our curtain install in the conference room. They instantly made the ceilings feel so much taller and helped the windows to blend in with the rest of the room. We’re really excited to make these changes to the office because they’re great examples of how transformative small changes are!

We try to keep all sorts of rugs samples, pillows and fabrics at easy reach to be inspired. Often one kind of texture or color will lead to more samples. But it’s what we’ve got to do to make each space unique to you! And of course we’ve decorated for Thanksgiving. Do you guys like our little pumpkins?

Searching for Light

Focusing on light this month has made us take notice of not only artificial light but natural light and the way we’ve made changes when artificial light just wasn’t enough. In this project, we had a client who had found the perfect house, well almost. The location was exactly where they wanted to be, with just the right amount of land and in the right neighborhood for their children. However, parts of the home felt closed off, dated and too dark for their liking. So, we tore down some walls and updated the space. We hope you love the final result!

BEFORE…

Our client loved the location of this home but couldn’t stand the small kitchen. One, it wasn’t a central part of the home and felt much too closed off from the rest of the house. The lack of space and lack of layered lighting made the face feel cramped. So, we opened the kitchen and placed it to more of the center. We added architectural details, natural elements, replaced all cabinetry, and installed new lighting.

Look at how low these ceilings once were!

With the perfect location and a house under budget, our client decided on some big renovations to make this their dream home. We worked with a trusted architect to increase the ceiling height and change the exterior of the home. We then added some large windows to bring in light to an otherwise dark space, increased the fireplace height along with cream colored bookcases. This one change brought in ample lighting that filtered into the rest of the home, and we finally had a bright and open concept.

Office Makeover

It’s so important loving where you work, being around people who encourage you and loving the difference you make! But it is just as important to love the place where you spend so much of your time. This office makeover was a super quick turnaround, but with huge results. 

After avoiding going to the office for months, our client decided to put in the time to make the office more enjoyable. With a little help from us, we used what they already had (a rug and a couch) and began designing. Their wish list: increased productivity, feeling proud to bring clients to the office, and to increase their storage. We decided to paint the walls a blue-grey and the acoustical ceiling tiles black. Doing this makes the low ceiling feel a bit further away and conceals the watermarks and age of the tiles— an easier fix than replacing them. 

We included texture in the storage boxes below, selected a warm toned console table and added some additional lighting. Their smaller accessories were displayed on a shelf, which maximized their table space. Pretty folders were displayed on the wall, as well as some colorful art.

Our client desperately needed storage. Although filing cabinets are ever present in the office, we decided on these adorable storage boxes. The neutral grasscloth and the mother of pearl handles elevate the space and make for functional and quick access.

Little details can make the difference between making an office feel like a home away from home.

We're Moving!

We have big news

We are celebrating 4 years in business, and what's a better way to celebrate than to move into a new space that's all our own! We have grown from one designer working from her home to three designers working in a cozy new office. We're already working on making our new office even more beautiful, but as you know, design work takes time. So in the meantime, we wanted to share some before + after photos of the space. We have LOVED creating a beautiful space in our office now, and we can't wait to do the same thing with our new space!

Organization

Organization is key when you have so many fabric memos and tile samples! We've put a lot of love into this closet (pictured below) to make it clean and simple for when clients visit but also practical for those days we are pulling samples for new projects. Our new office will have a resource room, but we are going to miss this sweet little closet.
